FEDERATION OF LEANDER CLASS FRIGATES

The Leander class frigate saw service from 1963 into the 1990’s and thousands of men saw service on the 26 ships of the class commissioned by the Royal Navy. In addition it saw service in Australia where it was known as the river class. New Zealand. The Netherlands, India, Pakistan, Ecuador, Chile, & Indonesia also used them. All in all it was an extremely successful type of ship.

As a result there are now a number of ships companies associations carrying forward the names of some of these grand ships. However some of the ships are not represented and people who served on these ships have no association as either the groups are aimed at individual specialisations such as comms, engineers or greenies, or a specific commission, leaving some people with nowhere to go.

JUDICIAL REVIEW AGAINST THE NEW PIP 20 METRE DISABILITY ASSESSMENT TEST

Despite continued reassurances from the Minster for Disabled People to the contrary, Disability Rights UK [NARPO are members of disability rights UK] is concerned that the wording of regulations means the higher rate of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will only be paid to disabled people who can reliably walk only up to 20 metres.

The wording of the Social Security (Personal Independence Payment) Regulations 2013 provides for those disabled people who can reliably move up to 50 metres to be awarded only the lowest PIP mobility rate (1).

The DWP expects that 428,000 disabled people who currently get the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) higher rate mobility component will lose it altogether or receive the lower amount (2).

Disability Rights UK believes this vital issue needs to be clarified through the Judicial Review action now being taken by three disabled people against the Government’s new mobility test. We are therefore submitting an expert witness statement.

CRUISE LECTURERS REQUIRED

Ten months ago the Cruise Lecturers Association enquired from NARPO as to the possibility of former officers giving Power Point talks on the Cruise ship Thomson Spirit.

Due to an announcement nine former officers and their guests cruised during 2012. With the majority booked to cruise again in 2013.

CLA now lists over 30 former Police officers as associates. Due to providing associates for Saga Cruises, Cruise and Maritime,

Princess Cruises (Carnival) and again Thomson, there is an additional requirement for former officers to talk on Police matters and General Interest.

To date fifty associates have been booked to cruise in 2012. The anticipated requirement for 2013 exceeds one hundred.

This opportunity may appeal to many retired officers and particularly to those recently retired.
