VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

GRANTS FOR WORLD WAR TWO VETERANS

I am writing to you on behalf of World War II veterans who, due to a lack of advertising, may not have been aware that in 2011 financial grants, Heroes Return II,  were available from the Big Lottery Fund to enable veterans and or their widows to pay a visit of remembrance to the theatre of war that they were involved in.

Veterans, male or female, widows, and widowers of veterans, can all apply. The offer also extends to- Merchant Seamen, as well as WAAF’s and ATS who worked closely with active personnel.

It appears that the number of veterans claiming these grants were far less than anticipated resulting in these grants being extended to December 31st  2012. It would be extremely helpful if you can find space to make these details known so that veterans, who will now be aged 80 and over, may still take advantage of these grants and plan a visit.

The grants range from £150 to cover travel and accommodation for veteran, spouse and carer, within the UK,  £1,300  to Northern Europe and £5.500 to the Far East.

As I have received a  grant for a visit I made last December, I would be more than willing to advise any of your readers on how and where to claim.

WERE YOU POLICING IN THE 50's? IF SO THE BBC WOULD LIKE YOUR HELP.

I am a researcher for a series of 5 daytime documentaries for BBC1 about the 1950s which will go out in March to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee.

The series will focus on life during the 50s and I am working on a strand of films that will tell of the different social tribes during the period.

One of the tribes we are exploring is the nostalgic Bobby on the beat epitomised by the popular TV Dixon of Dock Green.

We are really keen to talk to a policeman who was active during the 50s and has memories of what it was like that support the image presented in this series.

We really want a great character - someone with some great stories and ideally some photographs/archive of them working during this decade.

Do you have a case that you have never forgotten?

Maybe it's a case that remains unsolved or where the perpetrator almost got away with a crime, perhaps the case came closer to home than you imagined. Whatever the story, do you have a case that stands out in your mind?

I work for a non-profit production company, CTVC, which makes programmes that highlight social, ethical and moral issues for Channel 4, BBC and Radio 4.

I am looking to make a thoughtful and inspiring programme which brings the many stories of people who have worked in the emergency services to light.

Should you have a case in mind, I would be delighted to talk to you. I am in the early stages of research so there would be no commitment to take part in the final programme and all conversations would be in confidence.

Many thanks and I really look forward to hearing from you
